Boxing Headgear Buying Guide: Types, Fit & Sizing

Boxing Headgear Buying Guide: Types, Fit & Sizing

The right boxing headgear fits snugly without shifting, gives clear vision and matches how you train. Open-face headgear suits competition-style sparring and good visibility, cheek-protector styles add side coverage, and full-face or face-bar styles give maximum protection. Measure your head circumference and choose a design that stays put when you move.

Why wear headgear?

Headgear helps reduce cuts, scrapes and bruising during sparring and protects the ears, forehead and cheeks from glancing blows. It is required in many amateur gyms and sparring sessions. Headgear does not prevent all head injuries, so it should always be combined with controlled sparring, proper technique and properly padded gloves.

Main types of boxing headgear

Open-face headgear

Covers the forehead, sides of the head and ears, leaving the face open. It gives the best vision and lightest feel, and is the style seen in many amateur competitions.

Best for: experienced boxers, technical sparring, competition preparation.

Cheek-protector headgear

Adds padding over the cheekbones and sometimes the chin. It protects more of the face while keeping vision reasonably open.

Best for: regular sparring, beginners, anyone prone to cuts around the eyes and cheeks.

Full-face / face-bar headgear

Uses a padded bar or extended padding in front of the face to stop most direct contact with the nose and mouth. It offers the most protection but reduces vision and adds weight.

Best for: hard sparring, recovering from facial injuries, cautious beginners.

Type Protection Visibility Weight
Open face Moderate Best Lightest
Cheek protector Good Good Medium
Full face / face bar Highest Reduced Heaviest

How to measure for headgear

  1. Use a soft measuring tape.
  2. Wrap it around your head just above the eyebrows and ears, around the widest part at the back.
  3. Record the measurement in centimetres or inches.
  4. Compare with our size guide. If you are between sizes, adjustable straps usually make the smaller size workable, but message us before ordering.

How headgear should fit

  • Snug, not tight: it should not move when you shake your head or take a jab, but should not cause a headache.
  • Clear vision: you should see your opponent's hands and feet without tilting your head.
  • Ears protected: ear holes should line up so you can still hear your coach.
  • Secure chin strap: fastened firmly but comfortably.

Closure systems

Most headgear uses a hook-and-loop strap at the back, laces, or both. Lace-up backs allow a very precise fit; hook-and-loop is quicker for daily training. A combination is common on sparring headgear. Choose whichever you find easiest to adjust securely.

Caring for headgear

  • Wipe sweat off the inside after every session.
  • Air dry away from direct heat.
  • Store it uncrushed so the padding keeps its shape.
  • Replace headgear when padding flattens or stitching fails.

When to replace headgear

Inspect your headgear regularly. Replace it if the padding has compressed and no longer springs back, if the inner lining is torn, if the straps no longer hold firmly, or if seams have opened. Headgear that has lost its padding gives a false sense of security, so do not wait until it falls apart. Regular sparrers should check their headgear every few months alongside their gloves.

Headgear for sparring vs competition

Training headgear and competition headgear can differ. Sparring headgear often has more padding and extra face coverage, because you may spar many rounds a week. Competition rules for amateur events can specify headgear style, colour or approval marks, and in some categories headgear is not used at all. If you are preparing for a specific event, check the rules with your coach or the organising body before you order, and tell us the requirements so we can make headgear that suits your training.

Matching headgear to your gloves

Headgear works together with your gloves. Lighter gloves deliver more concentrated impact, which is one reason sparring is usually done in 14oz or 16oz gloves. Read our guide to 16oz vs 14oz vs 12oz gloves to choose the right weight.

Common headgear mistakes

  • Buying a size too big so the headgear slips over the eyes when hit.
  • Choosing maximum coverage when it blocks too much vision for your style.
  • Leaving the chin strap loose.
  • Never cleaning the inside, which leads to odour and skin irritation.
  • Sharing headgear without wiping it down between users.
