Quick answer: Pick glove ounces by your body weight and how you train. For bag and pad work: about 12 oz at 57–68 kg (125–150 lb) and 14 oz at 68–80 kg (150–175 lb). For sparring, go heavier, usually 14–16 oz or 16 oz. Always follow your coach's or gym's sparring rules.
Common questions
Does oz mean hand size?
No. Ounces describe how much padding the glove has. More padding means more protection for you and your partner.
What if I'm lighter or heavier?
Under 45 kg (100 lb): 8–10 oz for bags, 10–12 oz for sparring. Over 90 kg (200 lb): 16 oz for bags, 18–20 oz for sparring. The full table is in our size guide.
Should I get one pair for everything?
Many people start with one all-round pair, often 14 or 16 oz. Compare weights in 16oz vs 14oz vs 12oz boxing gloves, and see the longer guide on choosing glove size.
